AIGREFOIN

(2011-2012)

First of all the title, Aigrefoin, is the name of a woods, reminiscent of a place of overwhelming nostalgia for nature, hinting of a countryside too close to town.

Then comes the shape, horizontal, landscape framing, which reinforces this understanding of the images. Then begins the confusion: the invariable presence in the center of these landscapes of a slash of forest, green and cutting. A precise detail of violent color which breaks with the gentle harmony of underbrush at the beginning of winter. A sign which characterizes the entire series of photographs, a sign we thus adopt and then use to enter into this series like a step through the looking glass. Each confrontation with a new image leads to a new enigma, a landscape which begins with a sign on a tree trunk and step by step fills the whole photograph. The eye begins with a still-life and builds a complete landscape available for pondering or to go through. An absorbing activity where the whole as well as a fragment hand out appropriate roles allowing us to close or open worlds without limits.

This series is not a chosen itinerary ou a secretly divulged path, it is a succession of alternative realities springing from Remy Artiges childhood. In childhood everything is possible even the indescriptible sadness which takes hold of us at the last image.
